The fall semester of my first year here at Philadelphia University, I along with 13 other individuals were chosen to participate in Service Learning. As a group we completed 7 of our required 10 hours of community service on PhilaU's annual Day of Service. We volunteered at two places that day, Rebuild Together Philadelphia and The East Falls Development.

At Rebuild, we reorganized and restocked their shelves full of supplies to help families. We also help them prepare for the next few days worth of work. It was inspiring to see how dedicated these people were, and how much they depend on volunteers.

These next two albums are pictures from the East Falls Development, where we helped them prepare for the upcoming Arts by the River festival. Here we cleared a messy parking lot, hung signs, and worked on arts and crafts to be used during the festival. Also I found it amazing here, how there was only 1 full time employee and the rest were volunteers.

Overall, I felt that this day was a huge success in many ways. One of course, was that we were well on our way to finishing out required service hours, but I felt there were much more important ones. Many of us are not from the Philadelphia area and therefore are not very familiar. I felt as though these really shed light on Philadelphia, the good and the bad. Working in East Falls really helped to know the surrounding areas of the University. Yet, best of all was our time spent together as a class, not in the design studio. This day, let us really get to know one another because before this all we may have known about a person was that they make good models or that they can draw really well, but the day of service changed our interactions with each other. This day really brought us closer together and I am glad to be doing service learning with these 11 other people.
